University Library of Bayreuth introduces Walkolution systems

When most working people today remember learning in the university library, most of them have memories of sitting for long periods of time and the smell of books. because sitting is neither healthy nor effective for learning, the University Library in Bayreuth recently introduced workstations where you can work and walk at the same time.

"We want to offer our students new attractive alternatives to sitting and show that it can be done in other ways. Of course, we are also interested in the scientific fundamentals, which we are investigating here at the university in various projects related to working in motion,"

says Professor Dr. Susanne Tittlbach, Chair of Social and Health Sciences of Sports at the University of Bayreuth. The initiative is part of the Smart Moving project for more exercise on the university campus.

Besides the health benefits, the brain also benefits from working at the treadmill desk while learning. Actors learn their texts more effectively when walking and even the ancient Greeks preferred to give their lectures in ambulatories.

Dr. Eric Söhngen, managing director and founder of Walkolution explains the functionality of the innovative walking workstations and explains why they are so well suited for libraries:

"Since no motor is built-in, an almost noiseless operation is possible and the user does not consume any electricity. In addition, the possibility to adjust the speed individually with each step allows an intuitive use, which would not be possible with electric treadmills."
